Carolyn Goodman was elected mayor of Las Vegas for the first time, winning 60 percent of the vote, on July 11, 2011. She succeeded her husband of fifty-five years, Oscar, who was mayor for his term limit of twelve years. It is the only known instance of a spouse succeeding a spouse as mayor in the United States. Goodman is now in her third and final term. The Goodmans have served Las Vegas for a total of over twenty years!

Mayor Goodman is a driving force in the continuing development of the city of Las Vegas, enabling it to take its place among the major cities in our country. Whether she's championing nonprofit social services, tourism, a football stadium, educational improvements, industry, or development of the medical community, Carolyn is a great resource.

An earlier major accomplishment was Mayor Carolyn Goodman's founding of the prestigious Meadows School in 1984. She oversaw the day-to-day running of the school—its budget, staffing, building, and curriculum—for twenty-six years. Never in that time did Goodman ever take a salary for herself. Even though she retired from that job in 2010, the school continues to thrive and produce generations of high achievers who are admitted to fine colleges and universities.

What brought the Goodmans to Las Vegas? The couple moved from Philadelphia in 1964 with only eighty-seven dollars between them! Oscar was recruited to work for the district attorney's office, and Carolyn worked as a vocational counselor for the department of labor, training and building employment opportunities for African Americans when the city of Las Vegas was segregated. Even then, Carolyn advocated for opportunities for the underprivileged. She then worked in the hotel industry, in addition to raising four small children while Oscar was a “Mob lawyer” traveling the country.

Mayor Carolyn Goodman continues to work with pride to develop our city, making tremendous contributions to its future. The couple's life in Las Vegas is a tribute to service, and this writer is sure that their success is something they may not have anticipated when they moved here in 1964!
